Description

::Falls over dead:: This is a long overdue commission from Wondercon last year! The client wanted the Legend of Korra characters posed like the classic Star Wars poster. It took a lot of thumbnailing and composition tweaking to fit everyone, but I think I managed to find a balance between the characters while still keeping true to the original. I spent a long time trying to get this right, because I adore Korra and I really wanted to get everyone just right. I'm really proud of the palate as well. I feel I managed to capture a movie poster feeling with it. I even made myself paint Republic City, which I am proud of :)

I have some progress shots on my sketchblog for anyone interested in seeing the process:

Pencil, Paper, Adobe Photoshop CS5, many hours of MST3K to keep me company...

Now to make posters and send off!

Interested in a print? I'll be making limited posters of this available on my online shop: Use the Force, Korra! in laminated 18x24.
I'll only be making 75 of these, so get them while you can!

3.28 EDIT// Thanks for the Daily Deviation, guys! I really did work hard on this, so I'm really happy so many people are getting to see it :)

I feel I've come a long way since my last time working with Avatar's characters!

You've done a really great job with this illustration. Right off the bat, the concept is immediately clear - mashup of the infamous Star Wars poster with Legend of Korra. It's a very original concept; I never would have thought to put those two together! It's also composed expertly; my eyes don't get stuck in any place for long. They continue to move around the composition and back to the focal point. In terms of rendering, I'm particularly liking the use of gradients and glow effects, as well as the textures. They're used to great effect and the painting really comes alive. There's a few things that I think could make the image better. First, looking at the original Star Wars poster, we can see how well the figures are separated from the background through the use of warm and cool tones. I think this painting would really benefit from having the background recede more with bluish atmospheric perspective. Keeping the two figures on the left warm though will help to unify the composition and eye flow, but a receded background should help the main characters stand out more and enforce their silhouette value. Other than that, there's just a few anatomical issues - I think Korra needs a little more neck and structure under the chin, and I feel that the bottom most figure's outward hand is just a bit too big, even in perspective and with the large glove. Other than that I really love it! Great work.
